Requirements for a marriage visitor visa

The UK Marriage Visitor visa caters to those individuals who intend to get married or enter into civil partnerships in the UK. To make a successful application, the applicant must meet the UK Marriage Visitor visa requirements along with the provision of supporting documentation.

About Marriage Visitor visa UK

The UK Marriage Visit visa allows foreign nationals to come to the UK to get married, register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership. It is granted for 6 months and the holder cannot stay or settle in the UK after visa expiry.

The individual would not need a Marriage visitor visa in the following cases:

  • When converting civil partnership into a marriage, instead, apply for a Standard Visitor visa
  • The person has a pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • The applicant has already applied to the EU Settlement Scheme, however, no decision is made yet
  • Irish citizen

Eligibility requirements for the UK Marriage Visitor visa

To be eligible for Marriage Visit UK visa, the applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Aged 18 or older
  • The individual is free to give notice of marriage or civil partnership in the UK within six months of the arrival
  • The applicant will be visiting the UK for fewer than 6 months
  • The applicant will leave the UK before the visa expiry
  • The applicant will not make the UK his main home or live for extended periods through frequent visits
  • The person is in an authentic and genuine relationship
  • The applicant is capable of supporting himself during the trip or has funding from someone else
  • Proof of other activities you want to do in the UK in accordance with visitor rules

Documents required for UK Marriage Visitor Visa

Depending on the personal circumstances, the range of documents may vary. However, the applicant is usually expected to provide the following documents to support the application:

  • Valid Passport or travel document
  • Details of marriage and civil partnership, for instance, venue booking confirmation
  • Evidence that the applicant has paid money to cover some of the related costs
  • Decree absolute or death certificate of former partner (if you have been married before)
  • Information about your travel plans and where you intend to stay while in the UK
  • Proof of finance (for example, bank statements or salary slips to prove you can support your trip financially)
